Roma’s Ferguson watches Ireland’s 96th-minute Hungary winner in Irish Pub

Roma striker Evan Ferguson watched his compatriots secure a spot in the World Cup play-offs thanks to Troy Parrot’s last-gasp winner against Hungary from an Irish Pub in Rome, having stayed on with the Giallorossi during the November international break.

The Republic of Ireland secured second place in Group F thanks to a pair of impressive victories over Portugal and Hungary in their last two qualifiers over the last week.

Heimir Hallgrímsson’s side defeated Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal 2-0 in Dublin on Thursday evening, before going on to overtake Hungary into second place in the standings with a 3-2 win in Budapest on Sunday evening. A Parrott hat-trick, the third goal coming in the 96th minute, knocked the hosts out and sent Ireland into a frenzy.

Ferguson, who already has 26 caps for his nation at the age of 21, was not part of the squad for the November international break, though.

Ferguson, on loan at Roma from Brighton with an option to buy, had originally been called up by Hallgrímsson, but eventually ended up staying on in Italy for fitness reasons.

Not able to take part himself, Ferguson instead opted to watch Ireland’s memorable 3-2 win over Hungary from an Irish pub in the centre of Rome.

He had his picture taken and shared by the Scholars Lounge on Via del Plebiscito in the centre of Rome.

Quick take: Match context: momentum and small details could decide this one, especially set-pieces and transitions. Form and fitness will matter; expect managers to rotate carefully around the congested schedule. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
