Report Leeds United could move for Lazio striker Castellanos

Reports in Italy claim that Leeds United could be poised to make a January move for unwanted Lazio striker Taty Castellanos who was left out of Maurizio Sarri’s line-up for Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Udinese.

According to reports from Calciomercato.com and Il Messaggero, Leeds have made an initial enquiry regarding Castellanos’s availability in January.

Monday’s report claims that Leeds had also explored the possibility of signing the Argentine while he was still with New York City FC in 2022, but that move never materialised and the striker ended up joining Girona in LaLiga instead.

Despite netting 10 league goals from 29 outings last term, the 2025-26 season has been a bit more turbulent between injuries and a transfer embargo that blocked a move away from Lazio over the summer.

A hamstring injury kept the 27-year-old out of action for almost six weeks between October and November, and he was then surprisingly dropped by Maurizio Sarri for Saturday’s Serie A match against Udinese.

As Alfredo Pedullà has recently explained, Sarri would have gladly sold Castellanos during the summer transfer window as his characteristics don’t fit with the coach’s style of play, but a transfer embargo over the summer would have prevented Lazio from signing a replacement.

That embargo has since been lifted, and Lazio could now entertain serious offers for the 27-year-old.

According to Calciomercato, Castellanos would prefer to stay in Europe if he is to leave Lazio, despite a reported offer from Flamengo.

There has also been interest from the Premier League according to the latest updates. West Ham had shown an interest over the summer, but Monday’s reports claim that Leeds could potentially make a move for Castellanos in January.

Quick take: Big picture: the update fits broader trends across the league with schedule pressure and tight tables. Supporters will watch for clarity from training ground reports and official briefings. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
