Gilardino feels Pisa ‘deserved more points’ after Juventus quality emerged

Alberto Gilardino feels Pisa ‘deserved to have a few more points’ in Serie A this season after an unlucky 2-0 loss to Juventus. ‘Their quality made the difference.’

There were plenty of close calls this evening, as Stefano Moreo and Matteo Tramoni both hit the woodwork when it was still 0-0.

Bad luck turned on them again for the Juventus goals, as a double ricochet off Antonio Caracciolo and Pierre Kalulu bundled over the line, then in stoppages Kenan Yildiz was not offside when meeting the charged down Fabio Miretti effort from close range.

“I have to praise my lads tonight for the way they approached the game,” Gilardino told Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s not an alibi, but we had a lot of players missing, including three who were suffering from flu symptoms and didn’t recover in time.

“We defended well with tight lines, but were missing a little bit of luck in the finishing. With time, the quality of Juventus eventually emerged and made the difference, but I am proud of my team.

“We mustn’t stop now, I continue to have faith in what we are doing.”

As Fiorentina lost to Parma today, it means Pisa are still not rock bottom, but they do risk being left behind by the others in the relegation tussle.

They managed only one victory all season, along with eight draws and eight defeats.

“Looking at the table, you might feel perplexed, but we have put in some very strong performances this season,” added Gilardino.

“We deserved to have a few more points, but this means we’ve just got to work even harder.”

It doesn’t take a genius to see where their problems lie, because they have scored just one goal in their nine Serie A home games so far this season.

Will Pisa therefore try to invest in the January transfer window to sign a striker, or will Gilardino look to the youth academy?

“I speak daily to the club directors and if there is the possibility to improve the squad, then we’ll take it. I already used Louis Buffon a few times, and have always called on young players in my coaching career.”

Quick take: Transfer watch: this move could reshape selection options and tactical balance in coming weeks. If incentives and add-ons are confirmed, expect follow-up negotiations or medicals to move quickly. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
