Zanetti: ‘Absurd’ criticism of Lautaro Martinez

Inter Vice-President Javier Zanetti feels that criticism of captain Lautaro Martinez is ‘absurd’ and is pleased with ‘humble’ Francesco Pio Esposito.

Inter legend and current club Vice-President Zanetti reflected on the Nerazzurri’s season so far, focusing on some specific players.

Lautaro Martinez has scored 12 goals in 21 appearances across all competitions, but some fans, especially on social media, have criticised the Argentine for his inconsistency and poor performances in big games.

Lautaro also looked unhappy when he was replaced during a Champions League match against Atletico Madrid last week.

“I find the criticism of Lautaro absurd. He has always given everything and always will,” Zanetti replied in an interview with FcInter1908.

“Unfortunately, he knows it’s part of the game. He looks ahead and always wants to do whatever he can for Inter. Against Pisa, he allowed us to win the match; he is in the top five scorers in Inter’s history. What are we even talking about?”

Pio Esposito, 20, has proved to be a reliable backup in attack with two goals and three assists in 16 games across all competitions this term.

“We’re happy with Pio. First of all, he’s a bumble kid who listens and wants to improve,” said Zanetti.

“Whenever Chivu gives him an opportunity, he knows how to make the most of it. He’s a very generous boy, and we’re pleased with him.”

Lastly, talking about his former teammate Chivu, now the Inter coach, Zanetti said: “Yes, I know Cristian very well. As a teammate and a friend, he was a special and intelligent person. His approach at Inter doesn’t surprise me. He’ll keep going like this, and we have great respect for him. I wish him all the best; he deserves great success.”

Inter are level on 27 points with Roma in the Serie A standings, just one point behind the leading pair Napoli and Milan.

Quick take: Big picture: the update fits broader trends across the league with schedule pressure and tight tables. Supporters will watch for clarity from training ground reports and official briefings. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
