Which qualities Barella would take from his Inter teammates: ‘Thuram’s smile’

Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella has explained which qualities he would like to ‘steal’ from his Nerazzurri teammates, and has identified Cristian Chivu’s biggest strength ahead of the Derby della Madonnina against city rivals Milan on Sunday evening.

Inter will host Milan in the first Derby della Madonnina of the season in Serie A on Sunday afternoon, kicking off at 19.45 GMT. You can follow the action from the derby, and from all of Sunday’s league fixtures, on the Football Italia Liveblog.

This will be Barella’s 27th match playing against Milan. He has won 11 drawn five and won 10 against the Rossoneri thus far.

“Experience helps you play with more calmness and awareness, but the adrenaline is always there,” the Italy international told Inter’s internal media channels ahead of kick-off (via TMW) . “When you get to San Siro, even just for the warm-up, you can hear the decibels rising. That always gives you goosebumps.”

Barella explained that he is no longer the same player as he was when he first burst onto the scene, insisting that experience has made him a better player.

“I’ve always been very determined. When I was younger, my grittiness helped me stand out and make a name for myself. Compared to a few years ago, and with more experience under my belt, I’ve gained more awareness. I still have the same enthusiasm, but I’m more calm and I’m proud of this journey that I’ve taken.”

Barella went on to explain which qualities he would like to take from his Nerazzurri teammates.

“I’d take lots of things from my teammates. I’d take Acerbi’s mentality, his desire to never give up, to win the ball. I’d take Thuram’s smile, his desire to live and be happy. From Calha, I’d take his shot. I could go on.”

And what has impressed him most about head coach Chivu?

“I think his best quality is the empathy he has with the players. He’s a person who commands a lot of respect, but you can always compare yourself to him as well.”

Quick take: Big picture: the update fits broader trends across the league with schedule pressure and tight tables. Supporters will watch for clarity from training ground reports and official briefings. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
