Sommer and Inter the opposite of Milan and Maignan but Chivu won’t change in Madrid

It was Mike Maignan and Milan who came out on top when they faced Yann Sommer and Inter in the Derby della Madonnina over the weekend, but Cristian Chivu is unlikely to drop the Switzerland international for Wednesday evening’s Champions League test away against Atletico Madrid, Football Italia expert Pedullà writes.

Mistakes are part of the job for any footballer, and especially goalkeepers, but Sommer’s are starting to become a bit too regular for the Nerazzurri.

Still, Inter can’t drop the Swiss veteran now, otherwise they risk losing him, mentally speaking, for the rest of the season. And so, tonight, Sommer will have Chivu’s support in Madrid.

Additionally, dropping Sommer for Josep Martinez does not necessarily bring any guarantees either. His future still needs to be evaluated, and Inter will make those evaluations.

The situation in the Rossoneri side of Milan is the opposite. Maignan is one of, if not the best goalkeeper in Serie A, along with Mile Svilar, who continues to impress for Roma.

Milan decided to keep hold of Maignan last summer, despite his expiring contract. A renewal is now considered an essential step for the Rossoneri. But, given the misunderstandings that left a bitter taste in the Frenchman’s mouth last summer, Milan have to start again, and do not have any guarantees.

Quick take: Big picture: the update fits broader trends across the league with schedule pressure and tight tables. Supporters will watch for clarity from training ground reports and official briefings. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
