Serie A | Juventus 0-0 Torino: Another poor stalemate for Spalletti

Luciano Spalletti’s Juventus were held to another disappointing draw, this time by city rivals Torino in the Derby della Mole, as the two goalkeepers were decisive.

The Bianconeri had a mixed start under new coach Luciano Spalletti, winning 2-1 away to Cremonese in Serie A, but held to a 1-1 Champions League draw midweek by Sporting CP. Gleison Bremer, Lloyd Kelly, Juan Cabal and Arek Milik were still injured, but Dusan Vlahovic and Khephren Thuram shook off knocks. Toro were unbeaten in five, including a shock win over Napoli, and fought back from 2-0 down to hold Pisa 2-2 last week. Perr Schuurs and Zanos Savva were the only remaining absentees, but Leonardo Colucci stood in for suspended coach Marco Baroni.

See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

Toro have not beaten their rivals since a 2-1 result in April 2015, and in order to find the most recent win away to Juventus, you have to go back to April 1995.

Francisco Conceicao cut inside two players for a low drive charged down by Guillermo Maripan, while Weston McKennie stumbled when sent through by Dusan Vlahovic and failed to get the shot away.

Maripan made another decisive block when Conceicao pulled back from the by-line for what would’ve been a Vlahovic tap-in from six yards, while Alberto Paleari was alert on Khephren Thuram.

Michele Di Gregorio had to smother a Cyril Ngonge pass at the feet of Giovanni Simeone, but Alberto Paleari got down to fingertip a Francisco Conceicao angled drive inches past the far post.

Simeone had the ball in the net within seconds of the restart, but only after he had wandered offside on the Cesare Casadei assist to beat Di Gregorio one-on-one.

Thuram had threaded through for Kenan Yildiz, denied by a desperate Ardian Ismajli sliding tackle in the penalty area.

Substitute Che Adams couldn’t steer a header on target at the back post from a deflected Simeone effort, while Simeone’s header was straight at Di Gregorio soon after.

Torino were stepping up the pressure in the second half, as Adams cut inside Koopmeiners and his powerful low drive was spectacularly pushed over the bar by Di Gregorio one-handed.

Paleari also rushed off his line to narrow the angle as Yildiz threaded through for Jonathan David, then made an extraordinary reaction save on the McKennie bullet header from Edon Zhegrova’s cross.

Kristjan Asllani blasted inches over the bar from the edge of the box, while Yildiz saw his strike deflected off target and on the resulting corner David couldn’t bundle it over the line.

Lois Openda’s curler was deflected wide off Marcus Pedersen in stoppages, but not spotted by the officials.

Quick take: Big picture: the update fits broader trends across the league with schedule pressure and tight tables. Supporters will watch for clarity from training ground reports and official briefings. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
