Eddie Nketiah denies recent contact from GFA despite switch speculation

Eddie Nketiah denies recent contact from GFA despite switch speculation

[caption id="attachment_1273845" align="alignnone" width="2560"] Eddie Nketiah made his only appearance for England's senior side as a substitute in a 1-0 win against Australia at Wembley in October 2023[/caption]Former Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah has clarified that he has not held recent talks with the Ghana Football Association, despite renewed public interest in the possibility of him representing the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.The Crystal Palace forward, who scored 38 goals in 168 games for Arsenal before his 30m move in 2024, remains eligible to change nationality under Fifa rules. The GFA has approached him in the past, as it continues to engage diaspora players, including Chelsea defender Joshua Acheampong.Black Stars coach Otto Addo recently revealed that some players who previously declined Ghanas interest have reconsidered with a World Cup on the horizon. However, Nketiah insists he has not received any fresh communication."I havent had any calls or anything recently," he said. "My focus has been on playing well each week and helping my team win trophies. If Im doing well and doing the right things, then naturally the international future will resolve itself when its time to make that decision."Nketiah, born to Ghanaian parents in London, remains open to the possibility but is in no rush to commit either way.

Crystal Palace striker Eddie Nketiah says “future will take care of itself” amid Ghana switch talk

Crystal Palace striker Eddie Nketiah says “future will take care of itself” amid Ghana switch talk

Eddie Nketiah has responded to growing speculation about a potential international switch from England to Ghana, saying he is focused on his club football and believes the future will take care of itself. The Crystal Palace striker has been at the centre of debate in Ghana following the Black Stars qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His possible inclusion, along with Nottingham Forest winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, has divided opinion among supporters as the national team steps up preparations for the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States.Nketiah, 26, holds the record for most goals with Englands Under-21 side, and his only senior appearance came in a friendly against Australia in October 2023. Under FIFAs eligibility rules, he remains able to switch nationality because he has not played a competitive senior match.Speaking to BBC Sport Africa, Nketiah said he is proud of his Ghanaian heritage but is not allowing the conversation to distract him."At the moment, Im just enjoying my football with Crystal Palace; that has been my focus," he said. "Im Ghanaian and theres no denying that. Im proud of my roots. Im sure the future will take care of itself and what will be will be."Born in Lewisham to Ghanaian parents, Nketiah spent his early years at Chelsea before joining Arsenal and later moving to Palace in 2024 for 30m.

Messi inspires Argentina to victory as Angola impress in Jubilee clash

Messi inspires Argentina to victory as Angola impress in Jubilee clash

Argentina secured a 2-0 victory over Angola in an international friendly at the Estadio 11 de Novembro, where the hosts delivered a spirited display as part of their golden jubilee independence celebrations.Facing the world champions for the first time since 2006, 89th-ranked Angola approached the match with purpose and made a lively start, with Chico Banza almost capitalising early before Geronimo Rulli reacted well to avert the danger.Lionel Messi came close to opening the scoring but was denied by a sharp save from Hugo Marques. Angola continued to compete confidently, pushing forward whenever possible, while Argentina grew into the game and created chances of their own.Messi uncharacteristically missed a clear opportunity, but the breakthrough arrived on the stroke of half-time when he played in Lautaro Martínez, who finished low past Marques.Angola maintained their intensity after the interval and nearly levelled through Zito Luvumbo, who sent To Carneiro’s cross narrowly wide. Argentina, subdued for much of the second half, eventually sealed the win in the 82nd minute when Messi regained possession after an initial challenge and fired home his 20th goal contribution in his last eight matches. The result extends Argentina’s strong run in 2025 as they...

Otto Addo says Japan defeat offers key lessons for Black Stars

Otto Addo says Japan defeat offers key lessons for Black Stars

Black Stars coach Otto Addo believes Friday’s 2-0 defeat to Japan in the Kirin Challenge Cup has provided important lessons as Ghana continues preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.Speaking after the match, Addo admitted that the team’s performance revealed several areas that require improvement, especially with a squad that had little playing time together."It is still early. There are many things I would like to change after what we saw today," he said. "This was a new setup, and most of the players had not played together before. We still have a few matches to prepare for the World Cup, and I want to learn as much as possible from the players who featured today."The game featured several debutants, as Addo continues to assess new options ahead of next year’s tournament in Mexico, Canada and the United States.Ghana will next face South Korea in Seoul on Tuesday as part of their final international window of the year.
