Ordine warns Milan must understand two things ahead of busy January window

Franco Ordine has warned that the top-four race will become even more difficult after January, which is why AC Milan need to wise up and reinforce the team.

As things stand, Milan are in second place in the league standings, just one point behind their city rivals Inter. They are still very much in the Scudetto race, in other words, and they only have the league to focus on given the cup eliminations.

However, it’s clear that some reinforcements will be needed in January to stay at the top. The signing of Niclas Füllkrug could potentially be a step in the right direction, but there are still some doubts regarding his qualities after two tough seasons.

In his editorial for MilanNews this morning, the well-known journalist Franco Ordine outlined his three Christmas wishes. One of them has to do with the current squad, and understanding that some reinforcements are needed even just to remain in the top four.

“Regarding Milan’s current squad and position in the standings, a couple of considerations have to be made. First of all, remaining in second place, one point behind Inter, despite having Leao out for 45 days at the start of the season, and Rabiot and Pulisic out for a month or more, is a veritable feat.

“Furthermore, failing to grasp that as soon as the starting 11, 12, and 13 are out, the technical level drops is delusion. We can’t expect the miracle of the Scudetto from today’s Milan.

“The rivals will strengthen in January (Juventus and Roma), so the top-four race will become even more complicated,” he concluded.

We have to assume and expect that Inter, Napoli, Roma and Juventus will try to recruit players that will solve some of their issues this winter, and if we want to stay on track for the scudetto race, we can’t allow ourselves to fall behind.
Our squad is currently one of, if not the shallowest squad in serie A in terms of number of players. And in terms of quality, credits have to be given to Allegri for making good results with mostly average players. But one can only do so much with average players and teams are already catching on and understood how to deal with us.

Quick take: Match context: momentum and small details could decide this one, especially set-pieces and transitions. Form and fitness will matter; expect managers to rotate carefully around the congested schedule. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
