Niko Kovac: “We deserved to win”

Borussia Dortmund returned to winning ways after their late collapse in the Champions League on Tuesday. Karim Adeyemi’s stunning goal was enough to secure a third successive win for the Black and Yellows.

“I know what kind of power he has in his thighs. He jumps higher than anyone from our squad,” said Kovac about the only goal scorer. “He played only five minutes in the last home game against Union. Of course, he was upset. I told him ‘Karim, you’re a great striker. You have to work for the team.’ He’s doing that more and more now.”

The former Wolfsburg coach also expressed his delight at securing the three points. “I’m obviously delighted. First and foremost, about winning. And for the clean sheet, and that Schlotti (Nico Schlotterbeck) played the entire 90 minutes.

“We deserved to win the game because we didn’t allow anything. Of course, we would have liked to have won by a higher margin, but it was still a good and structured Wolfsburg team today. It was not easy to play against them.”

Quick take: Match context: momentum and small details could decide this one, especially set-pieces and transitions. Form and fitness will matter; expect managers to rotate carefully around the congested schedule. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
