McKennie and Thuram: ‘Always nice to score, but Juventus victory matters’

Weston McKennie assures ‘it’s always nice to score, but the win is what matters’ after Juventus flattened Cremonese 5-0, while Khephren Thuram takes it ‘day by day.’

The Bianconeri had seen their doubters step up after a 1-1 draw with Lecce, but have since set down a strong marker with the 3-0 victory over Sassuolo and this evening’s 5-0 demolition of Cremonese.

Gleison Bremer didn’t seem to know much about his goal, as the Fabio Miretti strike hit his face and ricocheted into the net, while Jonathan David scored for the second game in a row with a counter-attack.

Kenan Yildiz converted on the rebound after Emil Audero fingertipped a penalty onto the upright, then McKennie saw one effort given as a Filippo Terracciano own goal for the failed clearance on the line, before the American did nod in Pierre Kalulu’s cross for 5-0.

“In these games, the important thing is to get the three points, as the teams ahead of us dropped points. It’s always nice to win 5-0, for us and for the fans,” McKennie told Sky Sport Italia.

The American continues to play different roles, and is currently impressing as part of a trio supporting the striker.

“I am always at the disposal of the team, the important thing for me is not scoring goals, but winning the game and helping the squad. It’s always nice to score of course, but the win is what matters.”

There was also some controversy, as Cremonese had a penalty revoked by VAR for Manuel Locatelli’s sliding tackle, but the same treatment wasn’t afforded to a very harsh handling offence given against Federico Baschirotto.

This result means Juventus catch Napoli and Roma in joint third place on 39 points, although the Partenopei, Milan and Inter all have a game in hand.

“As I said last week, we play to win every game and want to improve day by day, then we’ll see where we are at the end of the season,” Thuram told Sky Sport Italia.

“This is a very important month coming up, both in Serie A and the Champions League, we have a match against Benfica that will be fundamental for us.”

Quick take: Big picture: the update fits broader trends across the league with schedule pressure and tight tables. Supporters will watch for clarity from training ground reports and official briefings. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
