Manchester United are keen on bringing Scott McTominay back to the club. McTominay climbed through the youth ranks at United before spending seven years in the first team from 2017 to 2024.

He enjoyed an extended run in the side under then manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during the 2020/21 season where he made 32 Premier League appearances – but had to settle for a bit part role for much of his time at the club.

McTominay struggled for first team minutes under Solskjaer’s successor Erik ten Hag before joining Napoli in the summer of 2024. He has gone to reinvigorate his career in Italy, helping Napoli win their second Scudetto in three seasons in 2024/25, while also lifting this year’s Supercoppa Italiana.

The Scotland international won last season’s Serie A Most Valuable Player award and the Serie Footballer of the Year award while also being named in the Serie A Team of the Year.

He has made 49 appearances for Napoli so far, scoring 14 goals. He has two goals and three assists in 15 appearances so far this season as Napoli sit third in the table and two points behind leaders Inter.

Caught Offside has reported that United are “dreaming” are bringing McTominay back to Old Trafford, but would have to stump up around £60m.

United are known to be in the market for central midfielders. A much reported shortlist is believed to include Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson amongst others.

An entire midfield rebuild is believed to be on the cards for United, with several possible ongoings also mooted. The futures of Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte, and Kobbie Mainoo continue to be doubtful. Skipper Bruno Fernandes has been added to that list following his surprise assertion that the club was willing to sell him last summer amid interest from Saudi Pro League clubs.

United are expected to try to add players in the upcoming winter market as well as next summer.
