Liverpool fans left asking the same Chiesa question after West Ham snub

Liverpool fans have been left asking the same question once more after Federico Chiesa was again left out of Arne Slot’s starting line-up for Sunday’s Premier League match away against West Ham United: ‘What does he have to do to start?’

It has been a troubling few weeks for Liverpool and Slot, who have lost nine of their last 12 matches across all competitions and currently sit in 11th place in the Premier League table, having won the league title just a few months ago. 

Despite their troubling run of form, and despite the fact that Slot has decided to make some big personnel changes against West Ham, there is still no opportunity for Chiesa. 

Though Mohamed Salah has been left out of Liverpool’s starting line-up against West Ham, Slot has named Cody Gakpo and summer signing Florian Wirtz on the wings, with Chiesa once again amongst the substitutes. 

The former Juventus and Fiorentina winger has only started once in the Premier League since joining Liverpool 15 months ago, and that was only for an hour in an eventual 3-2 defeat against Brighton in May, when Liverpool had already won the league title. 

Even though opportunities have been few and far between for Chiesa on Merseyside, reds supporters have still been calling for him to start. 

“Today is another day that Chiesa won’t start. Every day we should say sorry to him for his treatment. Alongside Szobo, he’s the only one this season that gives more than 100%, going into tackles, pressing like machine, even scoring and assisting,” one supporter wrote on X. 

Many fans have asked the same question: “What does Chiesa have to do in order to start?”

Another added: “Chiesa won’t even start when Salah’s at AFCON.” 

One supporter joked that Chiesa needs to change his nationality to Dutch in order to get a starting opportunity under Slot, an indirect dig at Gakpo.

“Few things in life are guaranteed: 1. Death, 2. Taxes, 3. Arne Slot choosing Gakpo ahead of Chiesa,” another supporter wrote.
