Lazio confirm Sarri has had heart surgery: Reason revealed

Lazio have confirmed that head coach Maurizio Sarri has had a successful operation on his heart after being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation.

Lazio have confirmed in a statement that Sarri had a catheter ablation operation at the Tor Vergata Polyclinic in Rome on Monday, and that the procedure, carried out by Professor Andrea Natale, was successful.

The Biancocelesti head coach had been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, a disorder which causes a rapid and erratic heartbeat, and can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath and increases the risk of suffering from blood clots and potentially a stroke.

Lazio have confirmed that Sarri is expected to return to his day-to-day leadership of the team within the next few days.

For the meantime, assistant coach Marco Ianni will fill in for Sarri and will lead training for the next few days.

“SS Lazio confirms that coach Mauruzio Sarri underwent a catheter ablation operation at the Tor Vergata Polyclinic after a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation,” a statement on the club website read on Monday.

“The surgery, performed by Professor Andrea Natale, an international pioneer with more than 30 years experience with this disease, was carried out with a positive outcome.

“Lazio’s club doctor, Dr. Italo Leo, was present for the procedure.

“The coach will resume his regular leadership of the team in the coming days.

“SS Lazio and the coach thank the Tor Vergata Polyclinic and Professor Natale’s team for their professionalism and the quality of care they guarantee for all patients.”

Quick take: Big picture: the update fits broader trends across the league with schedule pressure and tight tables. Supporters will watch for clarity from training ground reports and official briefings. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
