Frauen-Bundesliga Matchday Four Review

Frauen-Bundesliga Matchday Four Review

Like the previous two rounds, only one game ended in a draw on matchday four in the Frauen-Bundesliga. Bayern and Wolfsburg are leading the race with 10 points. On the other end of the table, Köln left the basement after a 2-1 win in early early-season relegation six-pointer.

Parity restored for the champions following their goalless draw at home to Carl Zeiss Jena. On Tuesday, Bayern faced league leaders SC Freiburg, and they regained top spot with an emphatic 4-0 victory.

However, there was also bad news for Bayern as Austrian international Sarah Zadrazil suffered an ACL injury early in the game. The 32-year-old has been a regular fixture in Bayern’s midfield since joining them in 2020. Lena Oberdorf, who was out of action for nearly two years, replaced Zadrazil and scored her third goal of the campaign.

Center-back Vanessa Gilles also scored three goals in her first four Bundesliga appearances. Germany internationals Lea Schüller and Klara Bühl netted the last goals in the final ten minutes. Two-time European champion Georgia Stanway registered three assists. José Barcala’s team has yet to concede a goal after four games in the Bundesliga.

Leverkusen started their season with a 2-0 defeat at Bayern, but they haven’t dropped a single point since then. On Thursday, last season’s fourth-placed team secured a third win on the trot.

Vanessa Fudalla scored RB Leipzig’s goals in a 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt at the start of 2024, and she repeated that trick with her new club. The visitors are one of the only two teams to reach double-digit goals, however.

The other club is Wolfsburg after their 4-2 success over Werder Bremen to stay in touch with Bayern at the summit. It was a first defeat for Bremen as they conceded more goals than in the first three games combined. Including the legendary striker Alexandra Popp, eight Wolfsburg players are already on the scoresheet after four games.

Quick take: Big picture: the update fits broader trends across the league with schedule pressure and tight tables. Supporters will watch for clarity from training ground reports and official briefings. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
