Extra Champions League spot: Where Italy stands after Roma and Juventus victories

Italy currently find themselves in fifth place in the ranking that determines which nations get an extra spot in next season’s Champions League following victories for Juventus in the Champions League and Roma in the Europa League earlier this week.

Another week of European action has drawn to a close: Juventus were the only victorious Italian side in the Champions League this week with their 2-0 victory over Jose Mourinho’s Benfica. Napoli were held to a 1-1 draw by Copenhagen, Inter were beaten 3-1 by leaders Arsenal, and Atalanta were defeated 3-2 by Athletic Club.

Over in the Europa League, Roma picked up an encouraging 2-0 win over VfB Stuttgart thanks to a brace from Niccolo Pisilli, while Bologna came from behind to rescue a point in an eventual 2-2 draw with Celtic.

These results leave Italy in fifth place in UEFA’s season association coefficient, which is used to determine which nations receive an additional spot in next season’s Champions League. The teams that finish this season in the top two will receive an extra spot in next season’s competition.

As things stand on Friday morning, England sit at the top of the standings with a points tally of 14.152, Poland rank in second with 13.625, Germany sit in third on 12.428, Spain are fourth with 12,187 and Italy fifth with 12.035.

Quick take: Big picture: the update fits broader trends across the league with schedule pressure and tight tables. Supporters will watch for clarity from training ground reports and official briefings. Continental stakes raise the intensity, where away goals no longer apply but margins still feel razor thin. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
