As Spain close in on the national team record of a 29-game unbeaten run, Luis de la Fuente noted how their last defeat, against Scotland, made the team “better and stronger”.

Spain have not lost a competitive international match (excluding penalty shootouts) since a 2-0 defeat to Scotland in European Championship qualifying in March 2023.

Since then, they have gone unbeaten in 28 matches, lifting the European Championship title along the way.

And, if they avoid defeat against Bulgaria on Tuesday, they will equal the record set by Vicente del Bosque’s Spain between 2010 and 2013.

Spain cannot seal their place in next year’s World Cup in October, but having won all three of their games in qualifying so far, they will take a big step towards the finals with a victory in Valladolid.

Quick take: Match context: momentum and small details could decide this one, especially set-pieces and transitions. Form and fitness will matter; expect managers to rotate carefully around the congested schedule. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
