Crystal Palace ace Mateta stunned by transfer collapse despite club advancing on replacement

Crystal Palace striker Jean-Phillipe Mateta will not be joining AC Milan after the Italian club pulled out of the deal due to issues with the player’s medical test. The clubs had an agreement in place over a £30m deal for the player, but after extra medical tests it seems the player is not deemed fit enough to complete the transfer.

BBC has reported that Mateta is nursing a small knee problem, and had an initial medical examination on Sunday followed by additional tests on Monday. Milan have now decided to pull out of the deal for the 28-year-old who made clear to the club his desire to leave Selhurst Park.

Palace were reluctant to let the player go this month without finding a replacement, but have since agreed a £48m deal for Wolves forward Jorgen Strand Larsen. Mateta was then granted permission to have initial medical exams in London before flying to Milan.

As it stands, Palace are still proceeding with a deal to bring Wolves forward Jorgen Strand Larsen to the club. Wolves accepted Palace’s £48m bid for the player on Sunday, and moved quickly to agree a deal for a replacement of their own in the shape of Southampton’s Adam Armstrong.

Neither deal has been finalized or formally at time of writing. Palace have also signed Villa forward Evann Guessand on loan until the end of the season.

Mateta is still considered free to explore other moves but is facing a race against the clock. He has admirers in Nottingham Forest as well as AC Milan’s Serie A rivals Juventus.

Quick take: Transfer watch: this move could reshape selection options and tactical balance in coming weeks. If incentives and add-ons are confirmed, expect follow-up negotiations or medicals to move quickly. Continental stakes raise the intensity, where away goals no longer apply but margins still feel razor thin. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
