Cremonese ‘fascinated’ by Vardy: ‘Enthusiasm running high’

Cremonese director Simone Giacchetta says everyone at the club was ‘fascinated’ by signing Jamie Vardy: ‘We found great humility and knowledge of Cremonese.’

Cremonese director Giacchetta explained to TMW how the newly promoted Serie A side managed to reach an agreement to sign Leicester City legend Vardy this summer.

The Englishman joined the Grigiorossi on a free transfer after the end of his contract with the Foxes.

“The idea was to find players who would help us secure survival. The striker plays a crucial role as you need to get somebody who can score consistently,” said Giacchetta.

“The market offers millions of options, but Vardy fascinated us all, for his ability, for what he did in the Premier League and for his history, given that he was a factory worker at 25.

“The first contacts were positive, and we found great humility and knowledge of Cremonese. He knew exactly who we are and the type of season we expected. His availability to talk to us and his eventual decision to accept the offer truly pleased us because Vardy does not need Cremonese or to fight for survival.

“The fact that he accepted the challenge after scoring nine goals in 38 games last season says a lot,” continued the Cremonese director.

“The owners shared the idea with us, so we went forward, finding the availability from his family as well, who moved away from England for the first time.

“He’s had a positive impact from the very first days, both in the dressing room and in the city, where enthusiasm is running high.”
