Conte confirms terrible Champions League record after historic 6-2 defeat

The humiliating 6-2 defeat to PSV Eindhoven made unfortunate history for both Antonio Conte and Napoli, but reaffirmed the coach’s poor Champions League record.

This was the first time Napoli had ever conceded six goals in a European competition, and the first time one of Conte’s teams have let in six in a single game.

The last time the Partenopei leaked six goals in any tournament was their 6-3 Serie A defeat to Sampdoria in December 1997.

While these were firsts, the painful loss in Eindhoven did add to the on-going struggles that Conte has experienced in the Champions League.

During his entire coaching career, the Italian has managed only 16 victories in this tournament, 14 draws and 15 defeats, an average of 1.38 points per game.

Most notably, he has never made it past the quarter-final stage, only achieving this during his very first season in the Champions League with Juventus in 2012-13.

After that, Conte went out in the group stage with Juventus in 2013-14, reached the Round of 16 at Chelsea in 2017-18, the group stage for Inter in 2020-21, and the Round of 16 again for Tottenham Hotspur in 2022-23.

Quick take: Match context: momentum and small details could decide this one, especially set-pieces and transitions. Form and fitness will matter; expect managers to rotate carefully around the congested schedule. Continental stakes raise the intensity, where away goals no longer apply but margins still feel razor thin. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
