Asamoah Gyan still ‘disappointed’ Ghana didn’t qualify for 2025 AFCON

Asamoah Gyan remains disappointed that Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana endured a difficult qualifying campaign, finishing bottom of their group without a single victory, ending a run of more than twenty years of consistent AFCON participation.

The failure has prompted widespread reflection, with many calling for a renewed approach before the 2026 World Cup.

Gyan shared his thoughts on the sidelines of the 2025 CAF Awards, where he discussed the strength of the nations heading to the tournament.

“I think we’ve got a lot of giants who are going there. Ghana is out which we are very disappointed but it is okay we have qualified for the World Cup.

“Nigeria did well; they were close last two years. Ivory Coast did well, so we have a lot of teams… Morocco is also a strong contender who are also doing well.

“I will say these three countries that I have mentioned, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Morocco are favourites.”

The upcoming tournament will take place from December 21 to January 18, 2026, with expectations rising for one of the most competitive editions in recent memory.

Meanwhile, Moroccos Achraf Hakimi was crowned the 2025 CAF Player of the Year at the ceremony held at Mohamed VI Polytechnic University, marking another landmark moment in his career.

Quick take: Touchline talk: leadership changes often bring short-term energy but require time for structure. Watch for shifts in pressing triggers, build-up patterns, and set-piece routines. Continental stakes raise the intensity, where away goals no longer apply but margins still feel razor thin. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
