Adeyemi’s stunner helps Dortmund beat Wolfsburg

Despite the injury-time collapse in Turin, the atmosphere was electric as usual in Dortmund as Niko Kovac’s side looked for their third consecutive league win. Additionally, Nico Schlotterbeck’s return was a big reason to celebrate for Dortmund fans.

Wolfsburg started the season with an opening day win against Heidenheim before conceding late goals in draws against Mainz and Köln. Paul Simonis approached his first big test with a defensive mindset. Dortmund were all over Wolfsburg inside the first ten minutes.

Karim Adeyemi had the first big chance right after the kickoff before Ramy Bensebaini saw a yellow card for a dangerous play inside Wolfsburg’s box. The visitors had a relatively calm ten minutes after that before conceding in the 20th minute.

Fresh from scoring against a club he nearly joined last year, Adeyemi found the net with a powerful left-footed shot from outside the box. The Black and Yellows continued their dominance with Maximilian Beier the next coming close to scoring when his header narrowly missed the target.

The German international had another chance at the closing stage of the half when Kamil Grabara parried his shot. Dortmund felt undone by the referee’s decision when Daniel Siebert denied them a free-kick close to Wolfsburg’s goal when Joakim Mæhle tripped Adeyemi.

Wolfsburg didn’t change their approach after the break, but they nearly got an equalizer, out of the blue. Konstantinos Koulierakis’ header was millimeters away from completely crossing the goal line.

For their part, Dortmund’s attack went invisible in the second-half as they failed to maintain their momentum from the first 45 minutes. Felix Nmecha’s header in the 75th minute was their first chance of note in a closely-fought encounter.

Quick take: Match context: momentum and small details could decide this one, especially set-pieces and transitions. Form and fitness will matter; expect managers to rotate carefully around the congested schedule. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
