Liverpool suffer major setback ahead of Real Madrid clash in the Champions League

Liverpool could be without Alexander Isak for their crucial Champions League group-stage clash against Real Madrid, according to respected journalist Paul Joyce of The Times.

The news comes as a major blow for Arne Slot, whose side are already grappling with a growing injury list at a crucial stage of the season.

The Reds host Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid on Tuesday night in what promises to be another chapter in one of European football’s most storied rivalries.

In his absence, Hugo Ekitike has started both of Liverpool’s recent league games, impressing with his energy and pressing. The Frenchman is now expected to lead Liverpool’s attack against Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Curtis Jones is also facing a race against time to regain full fitness. The midfielder picked up a knock during the 2-1 defeat to Brentford nine days ago and subsequently missed the matches against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.

His absence has further stretched Liverpool’s midfield options, with Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai carrying much of the creative burden in recent weeks.

As per Joyce, Jones is now back with the group and his return is a major boost to Slot and his staff.

It remains to be seen if the midfielder will be picked in the starting line up tomorrow.

Liverpool’s supporters will be hoping for positive news from the medical department before kickoff, as the Reds prepare to face a Real Madrid side that has tormented them in recent seasons.
