Chelsea are reportedly planning a mega-money assault on La Liga as a huge summer outlay on a former Premier League striker has been mooted.
The Blues are once again in a period of transition as Liam Rosenior makes himself at home in west London, with his main task to take Chelsea back to where they were in the Roman Abramovich-era glory days.
However, he won’t have it easy at Stamford Bridge if the fates of his predecessors are anything to go by, with BlueCo already on their fifth boss in less than four years.
So far, the Blues’ transfer policy of buying young talent in the pursuit of long-term, sustained success has borne little fruit thus far, with their Club World Cup triumph last summer appearing to paper over the cracks given the evident friction behind the scenes under Enzo Maresca.
Despite this, they continue to be linked with eye-wateringly expensive footballers ahead of the summer, when Rosenior can start to shape how he wants his Chelsea side to look – albeit with a little help from those upstairs.
And according to a fresh claim from Spain, they are after an ex-Premier League star who could yet cost a fortune.
Spanish news outlet Fichajes has stated that Chelsea are gearing up for a €300m (£260m) spending spree next summer, with Fermin Lopez once again named as one of their prime targets.
Barcelona attacking midfielder Lopez has long been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, but now a new name has entered the picture as the transfer rumours gather pace.
Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez has been identified as a key target by Chelsea, with manager Rosenior thought to be a fan of the Argentinian’s pressing abilities and link-up play.
Meanwhile, Alvarez is said to be ‘weighing his options’ as he faces an uncertain future at the Metropolitano, having failed to reach the heights of his first campaign in the Spanish capital.
Last term, Alvarez hit the ground running by notching 29 times in all competitions, but at the midpoint of this latest campaign, he only has 11 goals to his name, with just seven in the league.
This appears to be adding pressure on the 25-year-old World Cup champion, who won the lot during his brief time at Manchester City, where he was part of the 2022/23 treble-winning side.
Having moved for £81.5m in August 2024, you could argue that £130m is overpaying – especially for someone deemed to be underperforming.
However, Fichajes theorises that such a gargantuan offer would leave Diego Simeone no option but to accept their proposal despite Alvarez’s contract not up for renewal until 2030, potentially handing Chelsea a star player about to enter his peak years.
With a summer approach being suggested, there is plenty of time for Chelsea to switch their attentions elsewhere – with that kind of money, they can target almost any player on the planet.
Though for all the money spent by the Blues over the last few years, they have failed to bring in a reliable centre-forward. Liam Delap is still finding his feet, while Joao Pedro has underwhelmed, and the on-loan Nicolas Jackson appears to have no future at the club.
The rest of their recent attacking buys, such as Christopher Nkunku and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, have already moved on.
Signing a proven talent like Alvarez would be a welcome change that should pay off, whatever the price tag.
