West Ham United finally had a glimmer of hope in their relegation battle on Saturday afternoon, when they beat Sunderland 3-1 in the Premier League.
The Hammers have struggled to establish themselves throughout the season, and Nuno Espírito Santo faces a significant challenge to keep the club above water in what is shaping up to be a very difficult fight for survival.
The club were promoted back to the Premier League in 2012 and have since enjoyed periods of success, most notably their Conference League triumph, while largely maintaining their top-flight status with relative comfort.
However, West Ham now find themselves in a concerning position, sitting five points adrift in the relegation zone, even after back-to-back wins over Tottenham Hotspur and the Black Cats.
As expected, the Hammers have been active in the January transfer window, signing two centre-forwards, with Pablo arriving from Gil Vicente and Taty Castellanos joining from Lazio.
Despite their clear need for additional goal contributions, West Ham have conceded more goals (45) than any other team in the Premier League so far this season.
Defensively, the Hammers have endured a torrid campaign, and their current predicament can largely be attributed to consistently poor performances at the back, conceding an average of two goals per game.
According to Football Insider, West Ham are reigniting their interest in Manchester United defender Harry Maguire ahead of his contract expiring in the summer.
It is claimed that Maguire currently plays a key role in Michael Carrick’s plans at Old Trafford, but there remains uncertainty surrounding his long-term future, as he is expected to become a free agent at the end of the season.
Former West Ham scout Mick Brown told the publication:
“We wanted to bring Maguire in when I was at West Ham.
“We felt he would have been a good addition under Moyes and Manchester United were willing to sell, but the club wouldn’t meet his asking price.
“Now that he might be available on a free transfer, I expect that’s something they will be aware of and he will still be on their list of targets.
“He’s an upgrade on everything they’ve got at the moment, that’s for sure.
“The opportunity to get a player like him, who will improve their squad and add experience and know-how at the back on a free transfer, should be one they take.”
There is no doubt that the England international would bring a wealth of experience to East London if he were to arrive, but West Ham’s defensive issues require immediate attention.
Maguire is clearly part of Carrick’s plans for the foreseeable future, making it highly unlikely that Manchester United would sanction a move for their former club captain during the current window, leaving the Hammers facing a dilemma.
Securing Premier League survival will be Nuno’s top priority, and even a potential summer deal for Maguire would be far from guaranteed if West Ham fail to retain their top-flight status.
As a result, any reports linking the club with Maguire – hailed “confident” by teammate Bruno Fernandes – must be taken with a pinch of salt until the season concludes and West Ham’s fate becomes clear.
The Hammers may have reignited their survival hopes, but without immediate defensive reinforcements, those hopes remain on risky ground.
As the window runs down into its final day, the board’s next move could determine whether West Ham preserves their Premier League status or pays the ultimate price for a lack of urgency in the transfer market.
