'We must respect AFCON' – David Moyes as Gueye and Ndiaye prepare to depart

David Moyes says the Africa Cup of Nations must be respected as he prepares to lose Idrissa Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye for the tournament later this month.

The Everton manager addressed the issue while previewing his sides trip to Chelsea on Saturday.

Moyes enters the contest without a single Premier League away win at Stamford Bridge across 20 visits, but Everton remain optimistic.

Victory could push the Toffees into the top four, with the club chasing a third consecutive away win without conceding for the first time since December 2008.

Turning to AFCON, Moyes said players representing their countries deserve full backing, even if their absence creates challenges during a busy period.

We have to respect completely the Africa Cup of Nations, he said. The players will go to play in the tournament for their countries, and rightly so.

He admitted it is difficult for any manager to lose key players mid-season, but stressed the club will support both men before they depart.

Obviously, I don’t think it’s something that’s ever pleased any manager at any club that you have to lose your players, but we’ve got them for this weekend, then we’ll wish them well.

Everton face a struggling Chelsea side without a league win in December, offering Moyes an opportunity to finally end his long drought in west London.
