Juventus defender Lloyd Kelly is glad that we are ‘starting to see repercussions’ for racist abuse in football, but also warns ‘there is some way to go’ in this area.
The former Newcastle United man sat down with the official Juventus podcast and was asked about some of the issues affecting the sport all over the world.
Racist abuse has only increased in the era of social media, with clubs and authorities struggling to clamp down on this sort of behaviour in stadiums too.
“Don’t get me wrong, you can see that there’s work being done. I can’t sit here and say that there’s not work being done to help prevent or get rid of the racism that’s involved in football,” said Kelly.
“But I would say there is some way to go. It’s difficult being able to control technically what you can’t control, you know?
“But I would say that it’s headed in a direction where we are starting to see repercussions for people giving racist abuse, discrimination between the fans and the players, but there’s still work to be done.”
The full edition of the Juventus podcast featuring Kelly will be released on their YouTube channel on Thursday, October 16.
