One of Tottenham Hotspur’s star players has opened the door to potentially leaving for a Premier League rival.
It has been a terrible campaign for Spurs, with their awful league form compounded this weekend as they were dumped out of the FA Cup by Aston Villa in front of their home fans.
It is the latest setback for Thomas Frank during a month in which he has the opportunity to reinforce his squad before the transfer window closes.
While the north Londoners have been linked with a move for Santos defender Souza, Spurs’ only concrete activity in that regard to date has been the £35m exit of Brennan Johnson.
And according to recent reports, another major departure could be in the offing, which would be the latest blow to Frank’s attempts to turn Tottenham’s fortunes around.
CaughtOffside has claimed that Micky van de Ven has opened the door to a move to Liverpool, with the Reds keen on finding a long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk.
Van de Ven has provided some of Spurs’ brighter moments in recent years, with his dazzling goal against Copenhagen in the Champions League and iconic goal-line clearance in the Europa League final endearing him to the Tottenham faithful.
But Tottenham’s league form during the Dutchman’s Spurs career has been woeful, and the end of Ange Postecoglou’s time in north London has done little to reverse the rot in N17.
Indeed, Spurs have lost 30 top-flight games since the start of last season and are in danger of falling adrift of the European race, dropping to 14th after defeat at Bournemouth.
With this in mind, it is of little wonder that Van de Ven may think the grass could be greener at Anfield.
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s interest in long-standing, with the Reds thought to have been in for the centre-back before his switch to Spurs in 2023.
There is no mention of a price tag or the likelihood of Spurs sanctioning a sale, but the idea of one of their better players having eyes on his next move will surely have alarm bells ringing in north London.
Without significant and shrewd investment, Spurs are in danger of heading backwards and behind their rivals in the so-called ‘big six’.
With the Lilywhites’ current campaign now resting on a Champions League run and their ailing efforts to qualify for some form of European football next season, there doesn’t seem to be much incentive for top players to stick around.
Cristian Romero has also been rumoured with an exit amid reported interest from Real Madrid, so this may not even be an isolated problem for Frank.
Given Liverpool’s links to Marc Guehi – who is by no means a guarantee to arrive at Anfield considering the level of interest in the defender – it would now no longer be a surprise if they were able to successfully pursue Van de Ven following this latest bombshell.
