Tottenham are interested in signing Crystal Palace striker Jean-Phillipe Mateta if Randal Kolo Muani leaves this month. Kolo Muani is the subject of increased interest from former club Juventus, who he spent the second half of last season with on loan with from PSG.
He enjoyed a fruitful stint in Turin, scoring eight goals in 16 Serie A appearances. The Frenchman then joined Spurs last summer on another loan from PSG, but has struggled to hit top form in North London.
Kolo Muani has scored just twice in all competitions for Spurs so far this season, and now faces an uncertain future at the club. Though Tottenham reportedly have no intention of cutting short the player’s loan deal, the Daily Mail reports that they are willing to do business if they can find an alternative.
Palace forward Mateta is seen internally by Spurs as not only a suitable replacement for Kolo Muani, but as an upgrade. Mateta has informed Crystal Palace that he wishes to leave the club, and is now the subject of interest from many interested parties.
Spurs boss Thomas Frank is believed to be on the market for a physically strong centre forward that brings a goal threat as well as an aerial presence and hold up ability. Mateta ticks those boxes and is seen as a leading candidate for reinforcement.
A departure for Kolo Muani would leave Dominick Solanke as Spurs’ only out-and-out striker, with Richarlison and Mathys Tel seen more as attacking midfielders or wingers. Spurs have struggled in front of goal this season and see the attacking positions as a priority.
They will face competition for Mateta, who has admirers in the shape of Nottingham Forest and AC Milan. The former is believed to have tabled an official bid worth £35m for the player. Aston Villa were also interested in Mateta earlier this month, but have since signed Tammy Abraham from Besiktas.
