Thiaw regret like Tonali for Milan as Newcastle fans invent ‘Bella ciao’ chant for new defender

Newcastle supporters have already taken Malick Thiaw to heart, to the point of creating a terrace chant for the former Milan defender based on the famous song Bella Ciao.

The Germany international has become an instant fan favourite at St James’ Park, earning a starting role under Eddie Howe and dislodging Fabian Schar in the process.

The chant, now being sung home and away, caught Thiaw by surprise.

The 22-year-old admitted he was stunned by the tribute, laughing that “I don’t know who came up with it, but they’ve done a great job. My family and friends couldn’t believe it when they heard it. Even in the physio room, the lads are singing it now.”

The connection with the fans has grown in parallel with his performances.

Thiaw is delivering consistent displays alongside Sven Botman, posting a 93% pass completion rate, over five recoveries per match and looking increasingly assured in possession.

Howe praised his rapid impact, noting that “Malick has integrated very quickly. That is the biggest compliment I can give him. He already feels at home with his teammates.”

Meanwhile, in Italy there will inevitably be curiosity and perhaps a touch of regret, as Milan moved on by signing De Winter and promoting youth options after missing out on more established replacements.

However, in Newcastle, the German has found a fresh start and a club and fanbase who adore him.
