Supercoppa | Napoli 2-0 Bologna: Super Neres double secures trophy

David Neres was the start with two goals as Napoli defeated Bologna in Riyadh to win the EA Sports FC Supercup, the first time they’ve done the Scudetto-Supercoppa double since 1990.

Although it was the Final Four format in Riyadh, the EA Sports FC Supercup Final still came down to the traditional Scudetto winners and Coppa Italia holders. Napoli beat AC Milan 2-0 in their semi-final, but were still missing Kevin De Bruyne, Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa, Billy Gilmour and Alex Meret. Bologna saw off Inter on penalties after a 1-1 draw, losing Federico Bernardeschi to a fractured clavicle in that game, joining Lukasz Skorupski, Remo Freuler and Nicolò Casale on the absentee list. When these sides met in Serie A on November 9, the Rossoblu ran out 2-0 winners.

Eljif Elmas wasted a big chance in the opening minutes when running onto a Scott McTominay pass down the left, drilling wide of the near post one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Elmas also fired straight at Federico Ravaglia, while Jens Odgaard blasted wide from a promising position, McTominay testing the goalkeeper at the near post with a cross-shot.

Napoli had a huge scoring opportunity on 37 minutes when David Neres sent Leonardo Spinazzola through the middle with a perfectly-weighted pass, Ravaglia got a fingertip to the dinked finish, slowing the ball down enough for Lewis Ferguson to perform the goal-line clearance.

Moments later, the Partenopei broke the deadlock in sensational fashion. David Neres gathered a throw-in down the right, shimmied away from a defender and curled a spectacular left-foot finish into the far top corner from well outside the box. Ravaglia got a fingertip to that too, but it was not enough to keep that stunner out.

Nikola Moro replaced Odgaard at half-time, moving Ferguson into a trequartista role, but Napoli started the second half aggressively, Ravaglia making two big saves on Hojlund’s low drive and a looping Amir Rrahmani header on the resulting corner.

Bologna had a big chance to equalise when Orsolini stood up a cross from the by-line, but Ferguson got the timing of the jump wrong and only aimed a weak header into the arms of Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

Instead, Napoli doubled their advantage moments later. Neres pounced on the weak Ravaglia pass to Jhon Lucumi inside the area, dinking a delicate finish over the goalkeeper from a tight angle.

Hojlund over-hit the roll across for Neres on the counter, then both Hojlund and Noa Lang failed to make the most of another defensive error playing out from the back.

Jonathan Rowe came on and had a few promising situations, but only fired into the stands, while McTominay’s acrobatic scissor-kick volley was charged down at the far post.

It really should’ve been 3-0 late on when Miguel Gutierrez flashed a ball across from the left, but Hojlund and Politano both went sliding in, the Italian prodding over the bar from four yards. Lang also drilled wide when he got greedy rather than assist to teammates in better positions.
