Soule: ‘Want to stay at Roma for a long time and represent Argentina’

Matias Soulé admits he ‘dreams of staying with Roma for a long time’ and is relishing life under Gian Piero Gasperini, but will wait for Argentina despite ‘disappointment.’

The 22-year-old has been in Italy since 2020 with the Juventus academy, then went on loan to Frosinone before his €25.6m plus add-ons sale to Roma in July 2024.

Having initially struggled to show what he was capable of, his form has grown under new coach Gasperini, with guidance also from fellow Argentine Paulo Dybala.

“I am very happy with the city and the people of Rome,” Soulé told Sport Mediaset.

“Last season did not start off well, but I made up for it. I dream of staying with this club for a long time and I hope that’s what happens.”

It is a very different team under Gasperini, who is trying to get something different out of the versatile forward.

“Gasperini has changed and improved me in every way, he’s a great coach with a winning mentality. I like that you play real football with him, you have the ball at your feet and press forward.

“The strikers are the first to defend by pressing to win the ball back straight away and help the team, stealing it in their half. This is his trademark. I am content playing in the centre, as a trequartista or out wide, so I am given greater freedom to roam, and that is wonderful.”

Last term they went through Daniele De Rossi and Ivan Juric before Claudio Ranieri steadied the ship and took Roma to fifth place in Serie A.

“Ranieri gave us confidence and united the team, which is what we needed at that moment. Then Gasperini picked up where he left off. We’ve had remarkable results in 2025, but the table for the solar year doesn’t count. What we do know is that by continuing along this path, we can go far.”

Roma went into the break for international duty as the joint Serie A leaders alongside Inter, not a position they expected to be in at this stage of the season.

“We earned every point and must keep taking it one game at a time, because this is just the start of a very long season,” added Soulé.

“By carrying on along this path, we can aim high so that we can be competitive, which is what we and our fans want. It’s very early to talk about the Scudetto. Everyone can dream, from me to the team and the fans, but it’s too early.”

There were reports that Italy had approached Soulé to play his international football for them rather than Argentina, which is possible thanks to his ancestry and the fact he has not yet been given a senior cap by the Seleccion.

However, he rejected the proposal, insisting he was happy to wait for his chance with Argentina.

“I remain calm and hope it can arrive as a reward for all the good performances at Roma. I am a little disappointed, but not worried. The moment will arrive if I keep doing well with Roma. All I can do is keep working, try to be decisive in every match, until the call-up becomes a logical consequence.

“I can confirm that Italy is not an option for me. I am from Argentina, and I would like to represent my country.”
