Lautaro Martinez got Inter back on track with a brace and much-needed victory away to Pisa, a side who had kept four consecutive home clean sheets.
The Nerazzurri were shaken by back-to-back defeats to AC Milan and Atletico Madrid. While Henrikh Mkhitaryan returned to the bench, Ange-Yoan Bonny had flu symptoms, joining Denzel Dumfries, Tomas Palacios and Raffaele Di Gennaro on the absentee list, so Luis Henrique finally got a rare start. Pisa had just one win all season, but were unbeaten in six, including draws with Milan, Lazio, Torino and Sassuolo. Daniel Denoon, Isak Vural, Mateus Lusuardi, Tomas Esteves, Ebenezer Akinsanmiro and Calvin Stengs were out, with Adrian Semper suffering from a stomach bug, but Marius Marin was fit again.
See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.
Simone Scuffet smothered the Federico Dimarco free kick and Francesco Acerbi was offside when nodding wide from a set play, but M’Bala Nzola’s heavy first touch let him down in a promising opportunity.
Lautaro Martinez’s glancing header flashed just wide of the far post on a Hakan Calhanoglu free kick, but Pisa had a huge opportunity on the half-hour mark. Idrissa Touré knocked down a ball over the top for Gabriele Piccinini, who controlled with the left boot and thumped the volley with the right inches past the far post.
Moments later, Marcus Thuram’s curler also flashed past the far top corner, while Lautaro Martinez’s volley into the ground bounced over from a Nicolò Barella trivela cross.
After the restart, Touré flashed a dangerous assist from the right into the six-yard box, where a combination of Acerbi and Yann Sommer prevented the tap-in.
Barella’s attempt was deflected over by Raul Albiol and Piccinini also blasted straight at Sommer, but Nzola wasted a golden opportunity on the counter-attack when he drilled wide with only Sommer to beat.
Acerbi made another decisive block as Meister tried to squirm inside the box to get a shot away, but Inter broke the deadlock with a spectacular strike.
Francesco Pio Esposito won it back down the left and put in a low cross for Lautaro Martinez to blast first-time into the near top corner from 12 yards with his left boot. This was the first goal Pisa had conceded at home since the 1-0 loss to Udinese on September 14, ending four straight clean sheets.
Pisa responded, Nzola’s header deflected wide off Manuel Akanji, but Inter doubled their advantage. A corner was not cleared effectively, Andy Diouf sent Barella down the right and the angled drive turned into an accidental assist for Lautaro Martinez to tap in at the back post.
Lautaro Martinez threatened a hat-trick soon after, but turned wide from the Diouf pull-back at the near post.
