FC Augsburg slipped to a disappointing 1-4 defeat against Mainz at the WWK-Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Two goals down by halftime, Augsburg were handed a potential lifeline early in the second half when Mainz’s Dominik Kohr was shown a red card.
But instead of sparking a comeback, the hosts collapsed further as the visitors extended their lead, leaving the Fuggerstädter well beaten.
“We had set ourselves big goals. I’m sorry for the fans,” said a dejected Augsburg coach Sandro Wagner after the game.
“I want to give them a great year. We didn’t manage that today, and it really hurts. I am very sad,” he added.
Reflecting on the performance, Wagner pointed to a key lesson:
“Our biggest learning is to reach complexity through simplicity. We tried to gain security by making things complicated. The opponent showed us how it’s really done.”
