Roma join Napoli in pursuit of Manchester United’s Mainoo

Kobbie Mainoo continues to be linked with a January move to join Napoli from Manchester United, but Football Italia understands that Roma are also interested in bringing the England hopeful to Serie A this season. 

What had originally started out as a rumour in the British press in August, is now developing into a serious story that should be followed closely. Mainoo, 20, is pushing for more regular playing time, and Manchester United need to make a decision. 

Mainoo is under contract with Manchester United for another two years with an option to extend for an additional 12 months, and it is understood that his agents have a good working relationship with the club. 

However, Napoli remain interested in the midfielder, which means that United may be forced into a decision over his future in the coming weeks. 

Plenty depends on United’s valuation of Mainoo. It is estimated that a figure in the region of €45m-€50m is the current price. For that reason, there is a possibility that Napoli look to secure a loan move for Mainoo in the winter transfer window. 

Manchester United are still reluctant, recognising that they have made some mistakes in recent transfer windows, none more obvious than the sale of Scott McTominay to Napoli. 

Over the last few days, Roma have also explored the possibility of a move for Mainoo. The Giallorossi are also after a new midfielder in January, and preferable one who can play in multiple positions. 

For now, everything depends on the cost, the formula of a deal and Manchester United’s final say.
