Otto Addo requests for technical reinforcement as Black Stars step up 2026 World Cup preparations

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has formally requested additional reinforcements to Ghanas technical team as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, underlining his determination to give the national side the best possible chance of success at footballs biggest stage.

Ghana will make their fifth appearance at the Mundial when the expanded tournament kicks off in the summer of 2026, and have been drawn into a demanding Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. With the stakes high, Addo is keen to strengthen the technical backbone of the team ahead of the global showpiece.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has already bolstered the Black Stars backroom staff with the additions of experienced German coach Winfried Schfer, Desmond Ofei and Gregory De Grauwe. However, the head coach believes further expertise is required to compete effectively against the worlds elite.

Confirming the development, GFA Director of Communication Henry Asante Twum revealed that Addo has officially communicated his request to the Association.

I am aware that Otto Addo has requested to beef up the Black Stars technical team, Asante Twum told Sporty FM.

This is the biggest football tournament and he believes we must go there with the best.

Ghanas World Cup campaign will begin against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, followed by a heavyweight clash with England in Boston, before wrapping up the group stage against Croatia on June 27 in Philadelphia. After disappointing early exits at the 2014 and 2022 World Cups, the Black Stars are targeting a deeper run in the 2026 edition.

As part of their build-up, the Black Stars will test themselves against top-level opposition, with an international friendly against Germany scheduled for March 30 in Stuttgart.

The GFA is also exploring the possibility of another high-profile warm-up match against Austria.

Quick take: Big picture: the update fits broader trends across the league with schedule pressure and tight tables. Supporters will watch for clarity from training ground reports and official briefings. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
