Official: Juventus’s David wins Canada Player of the Year for 2025

Juventus forward Jonathan David has been officially crowned the Canada Soccer Men’s Player of the Year winner for 2025, his second consecutive and third overall victory. 

The 25-year-old, who joined Juventus from Lille on a free transfer at the start of the summer transfer window, is now a three-time winner of Canada’s player of the year award, having claimed victory in 2019 and 2024. 

Since the award’s inception in 1993, only four players have won the award on three or more occasions: David (3), Alphonso Davies (4), Dwayne De Rosario (4) and Atiba Hutchinson (6).

“I’m proud to have been chosen as Canada Soccer’s Men’s Player of the Year for a third time. I’m grateful to my teammates, the coaching staff, and everyone who continues to support our program,” David said. 

“As we approach a historic period for Canadian soccer with the World Cup coming to our country in 2026, it’s an exciting time, and I’m proud to be part of a group that’s focused on continuing to raise the standard.”

Canada national team head coach Jesse Marsch added: “Jonathan is a consummate professional and fully deserving of the Canada Soccer Player of the Year award. Jonny is an incredible person as much as he is a talented player. 

“To get an understanding of his commitment and desire to play for Canada, look no further than this summer’s Gold Cup. He put on our jersey when he didn’t even have a professional contract nailed down. He understands completely what it means to be Canadian and fight for the badge. I’m excited for an even better 2026 for Jonny and our team.”

David is expected to be the focal point of the Canada attack as they approach the 2026 World Cup, for which they are one of the co-hosts alongside the USA and Mexico. They will be in a group with Qatar, Switzerland and one of the European World Cup play-off winners.
