Inter President Beppe Marotta says the Nerazzurri and Milan signed a ‘historic’ agreement for a new stadium, which will hopefully be ready ‘within five years.’
Inter President Marotta was one of the guests at an event at Bocconi University on Friday morning, when he commented on the recent acquisition of the San Siro area from the Nerazzurri and their city rivals, Milan.
“On Monday, a historic agreement for sports in Milan was signed,” Marotta said via Calciomercato.com.
“The deed for the acquisition of such an iconic venue s San Siro, which represents the history of football, is an emotional milestone that deserves respect. Yet, the modern era and the demands of football required that this facility be transformed; hence, a need to envision a modern structure. The signing is a first step, but not yet the laying of the first stone.
“It took the perseverance of the city administration and Mayor Sala, of our ownership and Dr Ralph and, on Milan’s side, President Scaroni,” continued Marotta.
“I hope that this first step will lead us to a new stadium within five years, so that it can be included in the list of venues for Euro 2032.”
Inter and Milan’s new stadium will be built near the Stadio Meazza, but the clubs’ plan includes the demolition of most of the old stadium.
“The stadium is not only a necessity but also a strategic asset, because it strengthens the club and increases revenues,” concluded Marotta.
“Compared to the rest of Europe, we are moving at a much slower pace. What has happened in Milan should make us reflect and serve as an incentive for politics and investors to form an alliance to overcome the bureaucratic slowness that is so typical of our country.”
The timing for the formal acquisition of the Stadio Meazza and its surrounding areas was crucial as, on November 10, the current stadium would have become a monument of historic importance under Italian law if he was still publicly owned.
If it had happened, it would have been more challenging for Inter and Milan to demolish the Stadio Meazza as part of their plans for a new stadium.
