Manchester United’s rebuild under Rúben Amorim has been both expensive and extensive.
The club poured over £216 million into the squad during the summer window, reshaping the attack with the arrivals of Benjamin Šeško, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, creating a frontline that looks completely different to last season’s misfiring unit.
Yet United’s strategy hasn’t been solely focused on marquee signings.
The club has been quietly assembling a new generation beneath the senior squad, recruiting promising prospects such as Ayden Heaven, Senne Lammens, Diego Leon and several others — a clear attempt to future-proof the squad as much as supercharge the present.
And now, Amorim is pushing for another elite teenage addition.
Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has revealed the latest twist in the battle for AIK sensation Kevin Filling, with multiple European clubs now scrambling for his signature.
Plettenberg reports: “Borussia Dortmund are now in the race for Kevin Filling. Sebastian Kehl wants the 16 y/o striker gem.
He added: “Manchester United are still pushing to sign Filling, but no agreement has been reached with any club yet. Filling could leave AIK as early as this winter.”
United have been monitoring him for months, but Dortmund’s entrance into the race has increased the urgency around negotiations.
Filling is widely considered one of Scandinavia’s most exciting teenage strikers. The 16-year-old developed through IK Franke and Västerås, before moving to AIK’s academy in 2023, where he immediately stood out.
His rapid rise continued this season when, at just 16 years old, he made his senior debut in the Allsvenskan — and marked the occasion with a goal in a 3–0 victory over IFK Göteborg. Since then, he has added a second league goal and shown impressive consistency in limited minutes.
AIK staff are particularly enamoured with his mentality, praising his: “instinctive finishing and calmness beyond his years,” attributes that have attracted clubs across Europe — and especially Manchester United.
With Dortmund pushing hard and AIK open to a winter departure, the race for Filling is heating up rapidly. Manchester United remain heavily involved, and given Amorim’s willingness to bet on youth, the 16-year-old could end up being the club’s next long-term project.
Over the years, he's had the pleasure of interviewing some of the biggest names in world sport, including Usain Bolt, Rafael Nadal, Christian Pulisic, and more.
