West Ham United’s £15 million summer signing Mads Hermansen is facing increased scrutiny just months into his Premier League career, with Denmark manager Brian Riemer openly expressing concern about the goalkeeper’s situation
What was expected to be a major step forward for the 25-year-old has instead turned into a period of uncertainty, as Hermansen struggles to secure playing time under new Hammers boss Nuno Espírito Santo.
Hermansen endured a difficult introduction to Premier League football after arriving from Leicester City.
His shaky start cost him his spot in the starting XI, and since then, Alphonse Areola has firmly established himself as the preferred choice between the posts.
Under Nuno, Hermansen has yet to regain his place, and the absence of minutes is beginning to cause alarm beyond club level.
Danish media ahead of this month’s international fixtures, national team coach Riemer did not hide his concern.
“Of course it worries me,” Riemer admitted, as reported by Leicester Mercury.
“When you’re somewhere you don’t play at all, it’s not good, that’s just logical.”
Despite the lack of match action, Hermansen has still been called up for Denmark’s latest squad, largely due to the national team staff’s trust in his ability and work ethic.
Riemer praised the goalkeeper’s professionalism and consistency during training camps, saying Hermansen continues to impress whenever he joins up with the national side.
“Mads is a fantastically talented goalkeeper,” Riemer continued.
“I know how skilled he is, he proves it every time we are together. That is one of the reasons he has been selected again. I also know how hard he trains at West Ham.”
However, the Denmark boss made it clear that the current situation cannot continue indefinitely.
International selection depends heavily on regular club football, and as Euro 2028 qualification intensifies, the competition for the goalkeeper position is tightening.
“In the long run, for Mads and for the squad in general, being somewhere you don’t play any minutes will become a challenge,” Riemer warned.
Hermansen now finds himself at a crucial crossroads. With West Ham rebuilding under Nuno and Areola in strong form, opportunities may remain limited unless injuries or tactical changes open the door.
A January move, whether a loan or permanent transfer, has been quietly suggested by several analysts, although no formal interest has yet emerged.
