Manchester United are desperate to return to their glory days after a decade of disappointment, as they continue to search for the solution to their inconsistencies.
The Red Devils failed to qualify for European football after finishing 15th in the Premier League last season, so Ruben Amorim has been afforded the time to focus on domestic football and develop his ideal squad.
The summer transfer window saw Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens join the project at Old Trafford, and Amorim will be hoping they can make a positive impact on the side.
Their ambitions are to compete with Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City to become title contenders and serial winners once again, and patience among the supporters is wearing thin after so long without consistent success.
The January transfer window will present another opportunity for Amorim and the hierarchy at the club to look at new ways to improve and future-proof their squad.
One of the areas of concern is the midfield, an area Man United are expected to target over the coming months to rebuild for the long-term future.
Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro are in the latter stages of their careers, while Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo have been linked with potential moves away from the club to fund reinforcements.
Man United have been linked to several midfielders already this season including Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba and Nottingham Forest’s Elliott Anderson.
However, a new report from The Mirror suggests that the Red Devils may be able to capitalise on an unfolding situation in Europe.
According to the news outlet, Real Madrid star Federico Valverde could be open to a move to Man United after falling out with his new manager Xabi Alonso.
It is reported that the midfielder’s future at the club is in serious doubt, and United could be set to capitalise on the friction by securing his signature.
Though it won’t be a bargain option, it is claimed that Los Blancos will still command a fee of £100m to part ways with their star.
There is no doubt that Valverde would be a great asset to Man United, bringing a wealth of experience and a much-needed winning mentality into the dressing room.
Over 340 appearances for Real Madrid so far, the talented 27-year-old – once hailed as “unbelievable” by former teammate Casemiro – has scored 32 goals and registered 35 assists from his midfield role, winning the Champions League twice and La Liga three times.
The Uruguay international’s attacking threat and confidence make him the ideal successor for Fernandes, should United decide to part ways with their captain in the near future.
The only sticking point would be his expensive transfer fee – a price tag that comes with a weight of expectation that previous similar premium signings have failed to live up to during their time at Old Trafford.
However, given Valverde’s proven and well-decorated career so far, there would be a lot of hope that he could transform United’s performances in the centre of the pitch.
With that being said, it would be a no-brainer for United to make a move for Valverde if an opportunity to sign him presents itself, as he could be the catalyst in their attempts to turn their huge ambition into success.
