Liverpool make U-turn on January transfer decision

Liverpool remain winless in the Premier League this year so far, as worry continues to grow on and off the pitch.

The Reds suffered their seventh league defeat on Saturday evening, when Bournemouth won 3-2 in the final seconds of the game at the Vitality Stadium.

Following Manchester United’s victory over Arsenal, Liverpool have now fallen to sixth in the top-flight table, and there is growing concern that Champions League qualification could be a struggle under the current circumstances.

While poor performances and fine margins are a leading cause of the Merseyside giants’ downfall, they are also dealing with several injury issues that are significantly impacting their defensive presence.

Conor Bradley and new signing Giovanni Leoni have been ruled out for the remainder of the season, with both undergoing surgery.

Ibrahima Konate sadly lost his father last week, so it was down to Joe Gomez to support Virgil van Dijk in the centre-back partnership this weekend.

However, the 28-year-old suffered a knock when he clashed with Alisson Becker while trying to prevent Bournemouth’s first goal in the 26th minute, and was unable to continue, forcing Arne Slot to replace him with Wataru Endo.

According to The Telegraph’s Paul Joyce, Liverpool have pulled the plug on their negotiations with Spurs.

The respected journalist revealed that the Reds have decided they do not have sufficient reinforcements to sanction the move this month.

In conflicting reports, it was also claimed that AS Roma were in talks with Liverpool for Kostas Tsimikas to return from loan to Merseyside this week.

Fabrizio Romano reported that Roma have agreed the return, with their director confirming the talks:

“It’s true, we are in talks with #LFC about that,” revealed Ricky Massara.

There is no doubt that the news of Robertson remaining will be warmly welcomed by Liverpool supporters, given the situation the club currently finds itself in.

The Scotland international has been with Liverpool for eight-and-a-half years, playing a key part in the decade of success the club has enjoyed, while also playing an important senior role in the dressing room as vice-captain.

Indeed, Milos Kerkez has become a trusted player for Arne Slot and has quickly established himself as the starting left-back under the Dutchman.

However, Robertson continues to bring stability and experience to the team, and allowing him to leave during such an uncertain period for Liverpool would have felt like an odd decision.

The conflicting reports regarding Tsimikas are likely accurate, as he was expected to return in the event of Robertson’s sale, though it will be interesting to see whether that move still materialises following the U-turn on the vice-captain.

The final week of the transfer window may offer Liverpool one last opportunity to address their defensive shortcomings, but time is rapidly running out with Deadline Day next Monday.

Without decisive action, Slot will have to rely on a threadbare back line, leaving little to no margin for error in a season that is already slipping away from them.
