Liverpool are considering a move for Marseille forward Mason Greenwood. The 24-year-old has impressed since joining the French outfit in 2024.
The Manchester United youth academy product has reinvigorated his career in Ligue 1, scoring 32 goals in just 50 appearances. He has 11 goals and three assists in 16 Ligue 1 matches this season so far, leading the league in scoring as Marseille sit third place in the table and eight points behind league leaders Lens.
Liverpool are known to be in search of a long term successor to Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian is expected to leave Anfield at the end of the season, and was heavily linked to a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia last summer.
These links have intensified following the player’s public criticism of his club and manager after being dropped from the team earlier this season. Liverpool were keen on Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo but the Ghana international is now nearing a move to Manchester City.
RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande and Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise are two other names believed to be on Liverpool’s shortlist, and Spanish outlet Fichajes reports that Greenwood has also been discussed.
Greenwood has been linked with a return to the Premier League following stellar performances in France. Marseille are resigned to lose their star man and are preparing for what would likely be the club’s record sale.
Greenwood has a reported value of €80-100m and would likely command a figure closer to the top end after add-ons. The player’s age, pace, and proven goal scoring ability fits the bill as Liverpool’s desired Salah replacement.
Greenwood is also strong with both feet and can play anywhere across a front three. Versatility is believed to be another key attribute desired by Liverpool.
Arne Slot’s men are expected to rebuild once more despite spending nearly £450m on reinforcements last summer. The Reds broke the British transfer record twice to sign Florian Wirtz and then Alexander Isak for £100m (rising to £116m) and £125m respectively.
The club also added Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, and Giovanni Leoni as they sought to launch a title defense. Liverpool has suffered an indifferent campaign however, losing six games so far and sitting 14 points behind league leaders Arsenal who they face on Thursday night.
