Japan head coach Hajime Moriyasu has defended midfielder Tanaka Ao after the player apologised for the challenge that left Ghanaâs Francis Abu with a serious injury during Fridayâs Kirin Challenge Cup match in Nagoya.Tanaka had offered a public apology following the match, saying, "Iâm sorry about today," after his tackle resulted in Abu being stretchered off and later taken to the Toyota Memorial Hospital for further treatment.Moriyasu praised Tanakaâs gesture, describing it as a reflection of his character. "It's typical of Aoi. His actions as a Japanese person, showing consideration for others, are wonderful," he said. However, the Japan coach also questioned whether the midfielder needed to apologise, insisting that there was no malicious intent behind the challenge. "Did he play maliciously? In the end, it was a foul, but it wasn't something he was intentionally trying to hurt. I don't think Aoi is at fault," he added. The incident cast a shadow over Japanâs 2-0 win, with Ghana later confirming that Abu is in stable condition as plans for his treatment and recovery continue.
