Italy international Sandro Tonali was named UEFA Player of the Match after Newcastle United beat Athletic Club 2-0 in the Champions League, confirming himself ‘on another level.’
The midfielder was handed the trophy at the final whistle at St. James’ Park last night, following the victory secured with goals from Dan Burn and Joelinton.
Despite not contributing a goal or assist, Tonali’s performance and influence on the match was considered sufficient to make him Man of the Match.
“He was excellent in and out of possession and had the biggest influence in the game,” read the report from the official UEFA Technical Observer Group.
“The midfielder was strong in his duels and showed a great range of passing.”
Newcastle United’s social media channels were also impressed with Tonali’s contribution in the Champions League, noting he was “on another level.”
The 25-year-old has 24 Champions League appearances under his belt, and although he is yet to score, he did provide four assists.
