Inter are facing a key decision in goal ahead of next season, with uncertainty surrounding both Yann Sommer and Josep Martínez.
Sommer remains the current No.1, but is not getting any young and then with his contract expiring in June, the club must soon decide whether to renew or move on and the Corriere dello Sport have reported that the Nerazzurri are building up quite the shortlist of potential successors.
Initially, Cristian Chivu had planned to give Martínez more playing time this season to evaluate him as a long-term option, handing him consecutive starts against Sassuolo and Cagliari.
However, the Spaniard’s involvement in a tragic car accident, in which an 81-year-old man lost his life ,has inevitably affected his situation.
While investigations reportedly clear Martínez of wrongdoing, Inter recognise the psychological impact and have provided full support as he continues to recover mentally as well as physically.
Still, practical considerations remain. Sommer’s age makes a renewal unlikely, and Inter could decide to recruit a new goalkeeper while keeping Martínez as backup.
According to reports, Elia Caprile (Cagliari), Noah Atubolu (Freiburg) and Zion Suzuki (Parma) have all been scouted.
All three are young and are representing or have represented their national teams, aligning with Inter’s long-term strategy and Oaktree’s financial policy of keeping signings under €25m.
The club will now assess who has the technical ability, composure and leadership to succeed Sommer as the new No.1.
