Gudmundsson relief after final court case dismissed: ‘A convincing 3-0 victory’

Fiorentina forward Albert Gudmundsson has expressed his relief after winning the third court case against allegations in Iceland. ‘I call this a convincing 3-0 victory.’

The former Genoa player had been accused of sexual misconduct following an incident in the summer of 2023 at a nightclub in Reykjavik.

The woman who made the accusation had the case dismissed, lodged an appeal to go ahead with a trial and was asking for 3 million ISK in damages.

There was another dismissal in October 2024, and the final appeal was rejected last month.

Now that the matter is definitively over for the courts in Iceland, Gudmundsson has broken his silence with a post on Instagram.

“Then this case is finally over,” he wrote.

“It has now been 893 days since the events took place. I was there, I remember everything and I know what is true and right.

“I am happy to see the Supreme Court confirm the conclusion that the District Court previously reached – and let’s not forget that the District Attorney also dropped the case at the time. I call this a convincing 3–0 victory in my work.

“And yet here I am, almost three years later, after being under the microscope of the media almost daily for all this time. It has taken its toll – both mentally and physically. This case has prevented many opportunities in football; as everyone knows, careers are short and every year, every month and even every day is precious.

“I am not asking for pity, though. What kept me going were my closest people. My children, my grandmother, my parents, my sisters, my family and friends. You are the heroes in this process. I can never thank you enough.

“On the other hand, I have also lost people who were only friends when it suited them – and not when they needed to be. It hurt, but it was also good to realize it later. In return, others stood by me and showed me what true friendship is. I am deeply grateful to them.

“I know that there are people out there who will not believe me, no matter what the evidence or the results show – and that is fine. I know who I am and what I stand for. The opinions of others will never break me.

“To those of you who are still in doubt, I encourage you to read the judgments of both courts and keep in mind that according to the evidence of the case, more than just me were accused that evening. I will not be blackmailed, however, especially not for something that never happened. We can go into more detail about that later if necessary.

“I sincerely hope that even if there was one bad apple out there, it will not harm those who are real victims of violence. No more for now — peace.”

Gudmundsson earned a transfer from Genoa to Fiorentina on loan for €5.85m in the summer of 2024, but the Viola insisted there be no obligation to buy.

This was also because they wanted to wait and discover the result of the court case against him.

The loan was finally made permanent with a payment of €13m in July 2025, although he has so far struggled to live up to the performances he had at Genoa in the past.
