Crystal Palace are bracing themselves for a potential attacking shake-up as uncertainty continues to surround Jean-Philippe Mateta’s future at Selhurst Park.
The Eagles forward has made it clear he is open to a new challenge, with interest building from both Premier League rivals and clubs across Europe. With his contract running down and no extension agreed, Palace are now actively preparing for life without their leading striker.
Mateta, 28, has just 18 months left on his current deal and has informed the club that he is ready to move on. Juventus have already tested Palace’s resolve this month but have so far failed to meet the club’s reported £40m valuation.
Oliver Glasner has openly acknowledged the situation, admitting Palace will sanction a sale if their price is met.
“There will be a price that Crystal Palace [accept], with 18 months left on his contract. We’d do the deal, if JP wants. If nobody pays that price, then he will stay,” Glasner said last week.
With that stance clear, Palace have wasted little time in exploring replacement options.
Crystal Palace have already opened discussions with Wolves over a possible move for striker Jørgen Strand Larsen, according to talkSPORT.
The Norwegian forward is understood to be on Palace’s shortlist should Mateta depart, with Wolves believed to value him at around £40m. Strand Larsen is a familiar name to Palace’s recruitment team, having been brought to England by sporting director Matt Hobbs during his time at Molineux.
Once labelled “superb” by Alan Shearer, the 25-year-old made an immediate impact in England, scoring 14 Premier League goals in 35 appearances last season after arriving from Celta Vigo. Wolves initially secured him on loan before making the move permanent last summer.
This campaign has been tougher, with Strand Larsen managing just one league goal in a struggling Wolves side, but his physical presence, work rate and proven top-flight record continue to attract interest. Palace are understood to be among several clubs monitoring his situation closely, with a move expected to develop before the February 2 deadline.
If Mateta’s exit becomes inevitable, Strand Larsen represents a ready-made Premier League option for Palace — not as prolific this season, but still well-regarded and capable of leading the line.
With talks already underway, the Eagles appear determined to stay one step ahead in what could be a crucial transfer decision for their survival and long-term plans.
Over the years, he's had the pleasure of interviewing some of the biggest names in world sport, including Usain Bolt, Rafael Nadal, Christian Pulisic, and more.
