Canada coach Marsch: David ‘the best I’ve worked with after Haaland, now he won’t stop’

Canada coach Jesse Marsch predicts that Jonathan David ‘won’t stop’ scoring goals for Juventus: ‘After Erling Haaland, he’s the best striker I’ve worked with.’

Canada coach Marsch believes Juventus striker David will start scoring consistently after ending a 135-day Serie A goal drought on Tuesday in a 3-0 win over Sassuolo.

“I know Jonathan well, and I wasn’t worried after he missed the penalty against Lecce. It happens to everyone,” Marsch told Gazzetta.

“I had seen him live in Pisa. We often speak, so I was sure the goal would come soon. I wasn’t surprised either by the wonderful embrace from his teammates and Spalletti.”

David also provided an assist in the latest Juventus victory, and the entire squad, including reserves and coach Luciano Spalletti, ran to hug the striker after he scored against Sassuolo.

“Juventus are a great team, and these are the attitudes of a big club. David is happy at Juventus, and even in the toughest moments, he always told me he wanted to stay in Turin,” Marsch continued.

“Now Jonathan won’t stop anymore, and he will score many goals. He just needed a period to settle in. I said before and I repeat it. I am David’s national team coach with Canada, but at Salzburg, I coached Haaland and Milan’s Nkunku at Leipzig.

“After Erling, who is a monster, David is the best striker I’ve worked with. He has always scored and will do so even in a league with less space for strikers, like Serie A. Nkunku is less of a goalscorer, but he has great quality, and I’m happy Milan are giving him confidence.”

David joined Juventus on a free transfer from Lille last summer.

The only Serie A goal he had scored before Tuesday’s game was in the first league match of the season against Parma.

The Canada international now has four goals and three assists in 25 appearances across all competitions.

His contract at the Allianz Stadium runs out in June 2030.
