Bongonda strike earns DR Congo narrow win over resilient Benin

Theo Bongondas first-half strike proved decisive as the Democratic Republic of Congo opened their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Benin at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat.

Carrying confidence from their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup play-offs, the Leopards began assertively and imposed themselves early with sharp movement and quick circulation of the ball.

Their initiative paid off in the 16th minute when Bongonda capitalised on a defensive mix-up, keeping his composure to slot past goalkeeper Saturnin Allagb and give DR Congo the lead.

The Congolese side continued to threaten after going ahead. Cedric Bakambu came close to doubling the advantage, forcing Allagb into a strong one-on-one save, while another effort was ruled out for offside as the Leopards pressed for breathing space.

Benin, missing five suspended regular starters, showed resilience and organisation. The Cheetahs looked to respond through counter-attacks and set pieces, but found openings difficult to come by against a disciplined DR Congo defence that handled pressure with calm authority.

A late Benin push brought urgency but little reward, as DR Congo managed the closing stages well to secure a clean sheet and all three points.

Bongonda, named Man of the Match, reflected on the challenge. It was a difficult match. At this AFCON no game is easy. We only scored one goal, but the most important thing was taking the three points and continuing our journey, he said.

Benin coach Gernot Rohr remained encouraged despite defeat. It was a very good football match that did not deserve a loser. My players made me proud. We will prepare well for the next match, especially with our suspended players returning, he noted.
